Pouākai, Hokioi, Haast eagle OPEN EDITION
Pouākai, Hokioi, Haast eagle OPEN EDITION
The pouākai, also known as hokioi or hakawai (the old glutton) in different Māori traditions is believed to be what western science has labelled the Haast eagle (Harpagornis moorei) the largest eagle to stalk the earth and native to Aotearoa. Fossils of this massive predatory bird show a wingspan 2-3m. Skeletory remains have been found in midden but according to oral tradition this bird was known to eat humans rather than vice versa. It is thought to have gone extinct around the same time as it’s main food source the moa.
