Kawakawa is an important native medicinal plant and the host plant to the kawakawa looper moth whose larvae (caterpillars) are responsible for making the holes often seen in its heart shaped leaves. Many people believe that the caterpillars are attracted to the leaves with the mot active chemical properties.
