Kākāriki, Red-crowned Parakeet (Cyanoramphus novaezealandiae)
The kākāriki, red-crowned parakeet (Cyanoramphus novaezealandiae) is one of several endemic parrot species of Aotearoa. The red crown and low pitched call helps to distinguish this endemic parrot from other species present in Aotearoa,
In the ‘in flight’ variant its striking plumage is displayed. This was originally created for the birds of Tiritiri Matangi permanent exhibit at the Auckland War Memorial Museum Tāmaki Paenga Hira in 2020.
In the ‘perched’ variant a kākāriki perches atop a branch of Coprosma with the brightly coloured fruits clasped in its claw. The original painting of the perched kākāriki was initially produced for the poster Taonga o Aotearoa for Predator Free NZ in 2018.
