Moko Kākāriki, Auckland Green Gecko (Naultinus elegans)
Moko Kākāriki, Auckland Green Gecko (Naultinus elegans)
This moko kākāriki (Naultinus elegans) is an endemic gecko species. There are thought to be over 100 endemic lizard species of Aotearoa and a great amount of variety exists within species. Many are at risk due to habitat loss and predation despite their great natural camou age. Here the distinctive blue-purple tongue sweeps over the eye, a behavioural adaptation which compensates for lack of a natural eyelid.
