Pepeketua, Hamilton's Frog (Leiopelma hamiltoni)
Pepeketua, Hamilton's Frog (Leiopelma hamiltoni). Once considered two different species the Maud Island frog (Leiopelma pakeka) and Hamilton’s frog (Leiopelma hamiltonii), but found to be the same through genetic research. These pepeketua, frogs found in distinct geographical locations but are now classified as a single species L. hamiltoni although the populations at each site have slightly differing morphological characterictics (physical features).
Pakeka is the name known in te reo Māori of the location of the frogs formerly known as L. pakeka (Maud island variant, light green background). This population is slightly larger in size and differentiates in colouration to that found on Stephen’s island (Stephen’s island variant, brown background). These frogs have been studied since the 1980s and are known to live 30-40 years.
