The ruru or ‘morepork’ (Ninox novaeseelandiae) is a native owl and like all owls it is nocturnal by nature and hunts at night. It is pictured here with pirita (Alepis flavida) an endemic yellow mistletoe. It’s common name is taken from it’s cry of ‘morepork’ which may be heard from early dusk.
